Responsibilities

The incumbent performs duties consistent with the coordination of the Challenge Program which the target population is high security inmates with antisocial attitudes and behaviors, substance abuse, and/or mental illness. The incumbent is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the specialty treatment program and for coordinating and evaluating all activities within the program. The incumbent is responsible for the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological instruments and procedures which address the problems targeted by the specialty treatment program.

The incumbent assists in interdisciplinary classification of inmates by identifying behavioral, emotional, organic, and personality deficiencies, or drug/alcohol habituation. Subsequently develops suitable program and treatment contracts for individual inmates, has full professional responsibility and oversight for their psychological treatment plans. The incumbent plans and performs both individual and group psychotherapy on a regularly scheduled basis. Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary unit team in developing, implementing, and assessing program needs and goals. Within the treatment program is directly responsible for development, evaluation and coordination of residential and nonresidential treatment programs and for designing individual treatment plans.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

    Basic Requirements:

    Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required.

    There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position at these grade levels.

    Experience:

    At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

    Some examples of the qualifying experience are:

  • Experience in the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological instruments and procedures which address the problems associated with high security inmates with antisocial attitudes and behaviors, substance abuse, and/or mental illness.
  • Experience in developing suitable program and treatment contracts for individual inmates, and having full professional responsibility and oversight for their psychological treatment plans.
  • Experience in assessing individual performance, participation, and completion of programs in each phase of the specialized treatment unit including developing new instruments to assess the target population as part of the on-going evaluation.
  • Experience in developing, evaluating and coordinating residential and nonresidential treatment program and for designing individual treatment plans.
  • Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

    In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution. In special situations, a waiver may be requested up to age 39 at locations where there is a shortage of applicants under 37.

    The representative rate for this position is $97,573 per annum ($46.75 per hour).

    Special Conditions of Employment Section:

    Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.

    The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

    Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

    All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

    The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

    Successful completion of the \"Introduction to Correctional Techniques,\" three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
